An independent insurance agent may offer policies from multiple insurance companies. A captive agent represents one insurance company. That difference affects the options an agency can present, but it does not by itself establish the quality of its advice.
El National Association of Insurance Commissioners explains that both independent and captive agents represent insurers and receive commissions for policy sales. Ask how recommendations are developed instead of assuming either model eliminates financial incentives.
What does multiple-carrier access mean?
An independent agency can compare available options within the markets it can access. It does not necessarily represent every insurer or offer every product. Carrier appointments, underwriting requirements and your circumstances affect the choices available.
Ask which options were considered, why a particular solution was recommended and what limitations deserve attention.
What can a captive agent offer?
A captive agent can help explain the products available through the company represented. That relationship may provide familiarity with those products, while limiting the range of insurers presented through that agency.
The useful comparison is whether the available protection addresses your actual responsibilities, not whether one agency model automatically wins.
Compare the advice as well as the proposal
Look for a conversation about operations, property, income, employees, family responsibilities and existing protection before policy selection. Ask the adviser to explain exclusions, deductibles and gaps between coverages in plain language.
Price is part of the decision, but two proposals with the same general label may have different limits, conditions or covered activities.
Ask about ongoing service
Clarify how changes are reported, who handles policy questions, how renewal reviews work and what support is available after a claim. Confirm the agency’s licensing and experience with your type of coverage.
Questions clients ask
Does an independent agency represent every carrier?
No. Ask about the markets the agency can access for your particular needs.
Should I choose only on price?
Compare cost alongside policy terms, suitability and service. A cheaper policy may differ in ways that matter to you.
